Shelter Project
Developing shelters and transitional housing in the Digby area.
St. Patrick’s
On January 17th 2024, St. Patrick’s Church in Digby had two tiny emergency shelters delivered to their parking lot. This Shelter Project was initiated and funded by the Catholic Archdiocese of Digby-Yarmouth and its parishioners to help with the issue of homelessness in our communities. This is a joint project of St Patrick’s Church and the Digby & Area Housing Coalition Society.
Currently volunteers are working to have the shelters connected to electricity. They are also communicating with the Shelter Coordinator for the Diocese, learning the rules and best practices regarding shelter operations. There is also outreach to other churches who have been running similar shelter projects. All information gathered is being shared with community service agencies to help develop a waiting list for appropriate clients.
We are looking to expand the volunteer base which will help run the shelters, as well as explore ways to provide services such as food and showers for future clients.
The Shelter Project at St Patrick’s is evolving…Stay Tuned.
