“With one-quarter of Canadians struggling to put food on the table, Canada has recently received a D grade from Food Banks Canada for its performance in meeting the country’s food security needs.

“According to a 2024 report by the federal government’s National Advisory Council on Poverty, poverty is also on the rise, and people who once thought they were financially secure are starting to feel the squeeze.

“Canada is a signatory to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, recognizing the right to food, housing and an adequate standard of living.

“As a social scientist, my research shows that Canada is struggling to realize these rights because decision-makers often lack the political will to act, and the judicial system still relies on an outdated approach that cannot hold these decision-makers accountable.” Author is Tracy Smith-Carrier.

Home Sharing: Housing Outside the Box
Video Series & Resources

In November 2023, Transition Bay hosted our second Housing Outside the Box program. This full-day even was a community exploration of home sharing: the benefits and hurdles, building personal comfort, bringing those with excess housing together with those in need of housing, and determining what ongoing supports are needed.

As part of this program, we conducted a series of interviews with community members. These insightful conversations are available for viewing on our YouTube channel. Please take a look! Additional resources can also be found on our website.

If you have any questions or thoughts, we’d love to hear from you. You can email us at info@transitionbay.ca.

This project was made possible through the support of the Community Housing Growth Fund and other community partners. The Community Housing Growth Fund program is administered on behalf of the province by the Community Housing Transformation Centre.
