Shelter Project

Developing shelters and transitional housing in the Digby area.

St. Patrick’s

On January 17th 2024, St. Patrick’s Church in Digby had two tiny emergency shelters delivered to their parking lot. This Shelter Project was initiated and funded by the Catholic Archdiocese of Digby-Yarmouth  and its parishioners to help with the issue of homelessness in our communities. This is a joint project of St Patrick’s Church and the Digby & Area Housing Coalition Society.

The two shelters have been occupied since the fall of 2024.  The program is designed to give shelter to a person until they find adequate permanent housing.

In the meantime, plans for a permanent shelter have been discussed.  At the moment there is no group in the community that has the wherewithal to take on such a project.  Several groups in Yarmouth are working on getting a shelter there.  Through Coordinated Access, a CMHA initiative in the Valley, the Shelter Committee is working to determine exactly what the homeless situation looks like In Digby.  The surveys done to date have not been thorough enough.
